Hat tip to Anders who made a comment on the post where I highlighted an area the Eagles felt they had an advantage against the Cowboys. He mentioned that the announcers said the Cowboys struggled with wheel routes against San Diego. I did a quick review of that game and while I didn't notice any wheel routes one play stood out, but I'll get back to that in a second. My guess is this is one of the plays that Kelly noticed that came against the Bronocos.
Knowshon Moreno is going to run a wheel route. The Cowboys are in nickel and are going to blitz the A gap.
This is a perfect call because there is no LB to cover Moreno out of the backfield. This ends up being the responsibility of the DE which is a painful mistmatch to watch:
We didn't quite get that match-up in any of our 3 attempts I highlighted, but we did get mismatches that we were unable to exploit.
As for the San Diego game and speaking of mismatches, this one really stood out. Cowboys in man coverage and the DB on the top is already pointing out that Danny Woodhead is not covered.
Gates is going to motion to the top of the screen bringing a defender with him:
The safety comes down in coverage and now you can see the DB talking to the LB Bruce Carter, "I am taking Gates, you take Woodhead":
And the result is a TD, Danny Woodhead:
It should be said that Carter actually had pretty darn good coverage on that play given his assignment. Perfect throw and great execution by Rivers.
Anyway, the point is...the Eagles saw ample film that suggested that they should attempt to get their RBs matched up on Dallas' LBs down the field. Shame we couldn't capitalize. Something to watch for in game 2.
