I'd best start by saying that I love Vinny Curry. His personality is infectious; his fan loyalty true. Who can forget the joy on his face when he first came to the Eagles?
But...
Two years in and he has problems. Here are his first three snaps against the Saints. They illustrate all his shortcomings. His first snap:
Head up on the tackle.
Who cleans his clock with no help.
And deposits him in Kendricks's lap.
His second snap:
Lined up in the B gap. Note that the G (Evans) has his left foot on the hash.
Vinny lined up a yard outside the G but he lets the G hook him him. That's two steps the G took (right-left) and Vinny is still at the starting gate.
Evans has turned him and drives him.
Still driving him. Square, who lined up three yards inside him, is on the play, despite being double-teamed.
Square splits the double-team and makes the stop.
Third snap:
Finally, a pass! This is what he's in there for.
Vinny has flipped sides.
Pretty nice bull rush, except...
his head is down and he's out of his lane.
Is that a passing lane or is that a passing lane? Brees hits Graham up the seam for 21 yards.
On the first play he got completely washed out, showed no awareness of the play. That block by the tackle was too easy.
On the second play he let the guard get leverage and got washed away again.
On the third play he was out of control and opened up a huge passing lane. Brees and the G didn't take that lane; Vinny gave it to them.
I could go on, believe me, but I don't want to. As I said at the outset, I love Vinny. I just don't think he can play for this team.
This was the seventeenth game this year and he was making the same mistakes he made in pre-season. He was bigger and stronger but he didn't play bigger and stronger. He was nothing on running plays and a loose cannon on passing plays.
Sorry.
